Google has updated its mobile Maps application yet again to add more new features.

Tl_extracted 1Google has updated its mobile Maps application yet again to add more new features.

Android Smartphone users can download Google Maps for Android v5.8 from the Android Market as a free update. This version adds the ability to upload photos to any locations reviewed using the app’s My Places feature and simplifies the process of checking into a new ‘place’ when out and about.

Thanks to the Google Maps app being built into the iPad and iPhone software, owners of these devices need to use the Google Maps for Mobile web site to see the other new features.

Key among these is the ability to see cities around the world in a 3D view that shows buildings on the map as they appear in real life. These simplified three-dimensional cityscapes make it much easier to get around a city on foot, since they show the correct size and shape of nearby buildings.

Google Maps for Mobile can now be used to plan journeys on London Underground, too. Selecting the ‘Transit’ option when planning a journey in London seems to pick the tube by default, although this is probably just as well given the poor performance of its bus route planning…

Even so, we’d still recommend using one of the many cheap London Underground iPhone apps if you want travel advice on the tube. Unlike the Google Maps for Mobile web site, these don’t require internet access to work, which means you can still use them when you’re underground.
