If you’re still using an old iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and are contemplating an upgrade to an iPhone 4 in the near future, it might be worth keeping your wallet closed for a little while longer.

Although Apple is still characteristically tight-lipped about specifics, it has just announced that it will be launching something iPhone-related on 4th October — and it's a pretty safe bet that it's going to be the iPhone 5.

That means two things. First, buying an iPhone 4 now might mean it will be superseded by a more capable model in the very near future.

Second, if the iPhone 5 is announced, there’s a strong possibility that the current iPhone 4 will be heavily discounted by sellers to shift the old stock. That means there will be bargains to be had if you’re not too bothered about having the very latest gadget.

No one has any idea what the iPhone 5 might look like, how it might differ from the iPhone 4 or how much it will cost.

No one even knows — for sure — if it exists (some pundits think it Apple may just announce a souped-up iPhone 4), but you can read lots of speculation about what it might consist of on just about every gadget web site.
