If the prospect of poking around under the bonnet of your car to investigate a mechanical fault is something you’d much rather leave to a professional, you’ll probably appreciate this YouTube video.

The nine-minute montage shows a V12 engine being built from scratch using handmade components. And if that’s not impressive enough, the engine was built in miniature and displaces a mere 12cm3…

The engine is constructed from stainless steel, aluminium and bronze, and has 261 parts, 222 screws and took 1,220 hours to make.

The level of precision craftsmanship on show is mind-boggling, but even more impressive is that the engine is fully functional — although it runs on compressed air rather than petrol (but see the rather larger Ferrari 312 PB replica for that).
