If you’ve ever fancied touring New Zealand in a motorhome, but can’t quite face the logistics that comes with it, you might gain some inspiration from American travel blogger Kyle Ellison.

Kyle has just returned from a three-month jaunt that covered 7,000 miles North and South Islands in a 1995 Toyota Lucida camper van and he’s documented his adventure in a fascinating 12-part blog called Freedom to Roam.

Kyle took off in January and figured that buying a camper van in New Zealand would be the cheapest option for both getting around and finding somewhere to stay. New Zealand is apparently well equipped for camping, with Department of Conservation that oversees a network of campsites that cost around $7 US (around £5) a night.

We won’t spoil the story by telling you how it went, but we will say this was one the cheapest holidays imaginable — Kyle sold the camper van to a British couple at the end of his trip for $3,400, which means his three month use of the vehicle cost him just $300 (around £190).
