TomTom has launched its satnav app for Android smartphones. Currently available at a “special introductory” price, the app is available in a wide range of map configurations, with the UK & Ireland version costing £30.99 — £10 less than the iPhone version of the software.

Maps are stored on the Android smartphone and the app can be used without a mobile internet connection. UK & Ireland maps require at least 367MB of free storage, either on the phone itself or a memory card  — this can be checked via Settings > Storage, or similar, depending on the smartphone.

Maps are updated quarterly free for the lifetime of the app, but speed camera warnings and TomTom’s HD Traffic service require separate in-app subscriptions.

Here’s a video from TomTom that explains absolutely nothing about the new app:

We have no idea what’s

Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director, TomTom Consumer, said: “TomTom has a history of making great navigation applications. Our existing iPhone app gets fantastic customer feedback and regularly wins awards. Today, we are bringing this world-class navigation experience to millions of Android smartphone users for the first time.”

TomTom U.K. & Ireland currently has a star rating of 3.6, with five five-star ratings out of 11 reviews.

As with all smartphone software reviews, we’d take the negative reviews with a pinch of salt and it’s worth remembering that any issues or shortcomings with the current app will most likely be fixed with future free updates.

If TomTom for Android doesn’t appeal though, CoPilot Live Premium UK + IRE is available for £19.99.
