JAPANESE CAR GIANT Toyota is recalling around 75,000 vehicles in the UK, including some Avensis, Corolla and Prius models.
The cars are all subject to one of two possible faults. The first is a potential steering problem, which leads to a knocking or rattling sound and possibly a reduction in steering responsiveness.
However, Toyota has stated: “in such circumstances, the vehicle will remain safe to drive.” The company is aware of nine instances of the fault across Europe and no accidents as a result.
The Avensis, Corolla and Prius models affected were built between July 2001 and April 2009.
The fault has been traced to insufficient hardness of the extension shaft. According to the company’s statement, “the splines that connect the extension shaft to the steering
gearbox may deform if the steering wheel is frequently and forcefully
turned to the full left or full right position while driving at slow
speeds. This deformation may create increased internal clearance and
the splines may eventually, over time, wear out.”
Toyota dealers will inspect the part and if necessary replace it. This will take approximately one hour.
The second potential problem affects the water pump in the hybrid system of Prius models built between July 2003 and April 2009. If the water pump fails a warning light will illuminate, and it’s possible that the hybrid system will stop working completely. Toyota has said it is only aware of three instances across Europe and no accidents related to the problem.
Remedial work takes around 90 minutes. Toyota will contact the owners of the affected vehicles within six week. If you’d rather not wait, you can enter your car’s registration or VIN on the Toyota website to check if your car is being recalled.
