WHAT CAR?'S TRUE MPG initiative, which promises more representative fuel economy figures than the official numbers, is one year old.

More than a million drivers have now used the True MPG tool on the Whatcar.com website. Since testing began, What Car? has found that 95.5% of cars don't match the official economy figures. The average shortfall across all cars tested is 17%.

“We launched What Car? True MPG last April as a direct answer to the countless readers who had contacted us to say how disappointed they were with their car’s economy figure," said What Car? editor-in-chief, Chas Hallett. "Expecting high fuel economy and getting the opposite can double a household’s fuel expense. What Car? True MPG is a solution to this problem – the online tool gives Britain’s car buyers the most realistic fuel economy information possible – and it’s free to use.”

The web tool doesn't just give a single figure. It can be tailored to your driving style and the type of journeys you cover.

You can find out more about how True MPG works and how the testing is done over on What Car?'s website.
