LAST WEEK WAS the busiest, most tiring and probably most fun week of my year, testing tens of new models for the 2013 Tow Car Awards.

The results stay under wraps until June, but I can tell you that we tested 46 cars, a dozen more than last year. For the first time we've also worked with What Car?'s True MPG testers to accurately measure the impact of towing on fuel economy for cars of different sizes and at different speeds.

The results stay under wraps until June, but I can tell you that we tested 46 cars, a dozen more than last year. For the first time we've also worked with What Car?'s True MPG testers to accurately measure the impact of towing on fuel economy for cars of different sizes and at different speeds.

We've also tested a number of smaller cars and petrol models this year, as well as the usual family saloons, diesel estates and big SUVs.

The event is only possible because of close cooperation between Practical Caravan, What Car? and The Camping and Caravanning Club. We wouldn't get far without a fleet of caravans supplied by Swift, and Al-Ko, Witter and Milenco also help make the Tow Car Awards possible in different ways.

Of all the people involved, the volunteers from the club are the ones who deserve the biggest thank you. They give up their time for the benefit of their fellow club members and Practical Caravan's readers. Some of them have been involved with the event since it started in 2007, and I'm always impressed by their enthusiasm, good humour and hard work.

Like the volunteers, you'll be able to read the results in the August issue of the magazine. This year there will be more information than ever before online, too.

Although the Tow Car Awards only takes place once a year, we're now tweeting about tow car news all year round.
