England’s original spa town has never been more popular
One of the biggest industries in Britain today is tourism. But the city of Bath has been popular with tourists for more than 2000 years. The hot springs in the valley of the River Avon were first discovered by the Celts, but the Roman invaders turned it into a sprawling leisure resort, which they named Aquae Sulis after the goddess of hot springs. Then there was the great Georgian period that saw Bath mushroom from an ordinary country spa to the most popular holiday destination for Britain’s well-heeled for a few decades, and left us with a rich legacy of magnificent honey-coloured crescents and stately town houses.
But Bath today has more to it than mineral springs, and offers a host of family attractions both old and new. Whether you want to visit for a week or just a few days, Bath has something to suit every taste and budget.
