Your essential guide to caravanning in
Somerset |

Somerset is the West Country's best-kept secret: a part of England that seems to have escaped modernity. Narrow country lanes remain almost as they were 100 years ago, quaint villages still have their thatched cottages, and ponies graze on the moors as they have for centuries.
Residents deserve the credit for conserving the area. They take pride in showing visitors around and telling how they've protected their county.
And with such a wide variety of scenery,
from heather-clad moorland to stunning coastline, there is something to suit everyone.
This, naturally, makes Somerset a walker's paradise. Footpaths criss-cross the moors, and there are great coastal trails as well. The less energetic can take leisurely drives along lanes for their own taste of the countryside.
There is also a huge range of attractions.
Cider is one of the county's biggest exports,
and you can see how it's made. Ancient monuments litter Exmoor, and there is also stunning architecture, such as Wells Cathedral.
Even during the height of the tourist season, the area is relatively quiet, making it ideal for
a summer family holiday.
If you have never been to Somerset, try it. You are sure to be impressed.

For anyone who has not ventured beyond Bath, Bristol or Glastonbury. Somerset can be an eye-opener, says staff writer Matt Clark. Matt towed his Lunar Quasar with the Nissan X-Trail 2.2 dCi Columbia.
The summer of 1980 was a special time for reader enthusiasts Kathy and Terry O'Connell. It's when they married and took their first caravan holiday together. An old 10-foot Thompson T-Line was their honeymoon suite. "We've been 'hitched' – in both senses of the word – ever since," Kathy says with a laugh.
Now, touring with their Lunar Clubman 500-4 and Daihatsu Fourtrak, their favourite counties remain much the same.
