AIRSTREAM IS WHIPPING the covers off an all-new addition to its legendary line-up at February’s Motorhome, Caravan and Camping Show.

The innovative International 685 is the only family model in the Airstream range and has three fixed rear bunks as well as a front double bed.

Family planning

The 685 features three, large fixed bunks at the rear of the twin-axle bodyshell. What is novel however is that the bunks are not arranged directly over the top of the each other. The top and bottom ones run across the back of the van, while the centre bunk runs along the offside wall. This conquers the claustraphobia felt in many triple-bunk tourers.

A large side washroom sits on the offside while the lounge, which converts into a double bed is sat at the front. The layout is made possible by the use of a 2.5m wide bodyshell, first seen as an option on the Series II 684 launched in mid-2011.

Airstream’s technical director Anthony Slocock explains why the company has decided to build a family layout.

“Ever since we unveiled the award-winning 684 in 2006, we have been under pressure to design and produce a family model for couples with two or three youngsters in tow. The new 685 has been designed in such a way that five people can now sleep in individual comfort and we think it will be a great success.”

Kids don’t come cheap…

Sales Director Michael Hold added: “The interest over the years in a large family-orientated European Airstream has always been there and now we can deliver a travel trailer that comfortably fulfils the requirements of a family of five.  Family touring has never been so luxurious or cool and we are delighted with the results.”

But as is often the case with stylish things, the 685 is expensive and exclusive. Prices start at £59,980 although first delivery can be as soon as Spring 2012.
