April 05: Grime fighters
We test and review 12 products to help you clean up your act in time for the new touring season

FULL INFO AND OVERVIEW IN THE APRIL 2005 ISSUE OF THE MAGAZINE:
Introduction, what to look out for.

Route 2000 Caravan Cleaner
Price £3.40
Tel 0845 4560582
Overall score 4/5
Comments Many of the cleaners on test here are relatively odour free. With this product, only if we sniffed carefully did we detect the merest soapy whiff, and Route 2000 seems to have gone out of its way to produce a refreshing citrus-smelling solution.

Autoglym Caravan
Motorhome Cleaner

Price £6.99
Tel 01462 677766
Web www.autoglym.com
Overall score 4/5
Comments: Our winning three recommended products in this review have all been the same to use: simply apply, then rinse off. Autoglym's product is different: first you soak the panel with water, then you spray this on and, finally, rinse it off.

CaraPak Maintenance Concentrated Wash'n'Wax
Price £3.65
Tel 0800 970 0860
Web www.carapak.co.uk
Overall score 5/5
Comments Other than at shows, you're unlikely to see this product in the shops because it's mostly sold via mail order. On one hand, that's great because it keeps the price down, but on the other, fewer people will try it and realise what an effective mix it is.

Fenwick's Superior Motorhome Cleaner
Price £7.95
Tel 01270 524111
Web www.fenwicks.info
Overall score 5/5
Comments This cleaning product certainly needs no introduction to the vast majority of motorcaravanners and, as you might expect, it comes out top of the class in our group of products on test here.

Thetford Shampoo & Wax
Price £4.99
Tel 02476 322700
Web www.thetford-europe.com
Overall score 3/5
Comments As this costs the same as the Thetford shampoo you may as well buy it and benefit from the wax included in the mixture. But this product's cleaning performance leaves much to be desired.

McKLords Caravan Wash
Price £3.99
Tel 01745 585995
Web www.mcklords.com
Overall score 3/5
Comments We would only recommend this product for light cleaning duties. Although it finally ate its way through our test algae, it did required plenty of elbow work. Had we used a telescopic brush, rather than a cloth, we wouldn't have been able to apply so much pressure, either.

Blue Diamond Exterior Caravan Cleaner
Price £3.49
Tel 01924 410050
Overall score 5/5
Comments This budget mix gave us excellent results and on really tough algae, it even outperformed our 'Best Buy' Fenwick's product. It made short work of light dirt and black streaks.

Spray 9 All Purpose Caravan & Outdoor Wash
Price £13
Tel 01752 231931
Overall score 3/5
Comments Although the most expensive product on test here, but you get a self-contained spray system: two valves allow you to easily control the flow of water and ingredients, and we're glad to see good quality Hozelock fittings are used throughout.

Thetford Shampoo
Price £4.99
Tel 02476 322700
Web www.thetford-europe.com
Overall score 2/5
Comments Thetford is another well-known brand, but we were disappointed with the cleaning results – even light soiling proved more of a challenge than with some other mixes we used. We weren't overly keen on the method of application, either.

Silky - Caravan and Boat Cream Cleaner
Price £2.50
Tel 01484 841016
Overall score 4/5
Comments The Silky brand name is a familiar one to most motorhome owners. This cleaner is different from the others on test here because it is a cream rather than a liquid. Application is with a damp cloth.

CaraPak Maintenance DeepClean TFR
Price £9.80
Tel 0800 970 0860
Web www.carapak.co.uk
Overall score 4/5
Comments Carapak's other product on test here is a traffic film remover and made a good job of cleaning our test 'van. Algae proved to be the most difficult challenge, requiring noticeably more elbow grease to remove than with some other products – but we used a 1:35 mix, which is half way between Carapak's minimum and maximum recommended dilutions.

Quest Carawash
Price £3.49
Tel 01527 516518
Overall score 1/5
Comments The label suggests varying dilutions: we used the one for heavily soiled surfaces, so the entire one-litre bottle went into our ten-litre bucket; but the results were not good.
