June 2006: Flat-blade screwdrivers

FULL INFORMATION, OVERVIEW AND COMPARISIONS CAN BE FOUND IN THE JUNE 2006 ISSUE OF PRACTICAL CARAVAN MAGAZINE

Draper Super-Grip 53229
Comments It's hard to fault this: the handle gives more grip than any other product here, and the tough, strongly magnetised tip transmits force without mangling. The shaft is square and penetrates most of the handle's length.

EDITOR'S CHOICE

Franklin 9660
Comments Only the hard-to-grip square handle lets this product down. The shaft runs from tip to end, and there's a huge nut on top for use with a spanner. You can also use a hammer on this nut. The blade is tough and magnetised.
Price £3.2

Halfords 6 x 100mm
Comments This is similar to Franklin's 9660 (left). The metal shaft runs from the blade to the large cast nut on top of the handle - and the tip's tough and well magnetised, but the poorly-shaped handle allows little grip.

Teng Tools MD932
Comments That grey handle gives almost twice the grip of our other 'Recommended' products. The blade is tough, strongly magnetised, and the shaft goes most of the way up the handle. It's hexagonal too, so you can use a spanner on it.

Stanley DynaGrip Pro 7-piece set
Comments Stanley claims the handle allows 30 per cent more grip than basic screwdrivers, but our tests suggest nearer 150 per cent. Good shaft length into the handle, a tough tip, and a big nut for spanner use – but no magnetic tip.

Draper Expert 55495
Comments Like Draper's Supergrip (left), this is more effective than it looks: the tip is not as tough, nor as well magnetised, but the shaft sits deep in the handle and has a metal nut cast into it. There is no hanging hole, though.

Halfords Professional 5.5 x 125mm
Comments The shape and feel of the handle allows plenty of grip. The blade is strong enough to transmit the force without mangling, and is adequately magnetic. The shaft sits three-quarters of the way into the handle. No nut, though.

Stahlwille SDF1200-5.5 x 100
Comments What's this - a wooden handle? Yes, and the tough glaze, and shaft going right through it, means good durability. Only the difficult grip lets it down. The tip is tough, but not magnetic, and a large nut is cast into the shaft.

Draper 198160
Comments Draper's budget tool is as good as their Expert one (above, left), but the handle is harder to grip. The blade is tough and magnetic, and a nut is cast into the shaft. The shaft goes most of the way through the handle.

Franklin Power Grip 9155
Comments The blade is tough and strongly magnetised but the handle doesn't provide much grip, and can be uncomfortable. The shaft extends less than half way up the plastic handle, and the only nut is cast into it.
