Nov 04: Wheelclamps
are the first line of defence against thieves. We put seven through their paces

PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT
Consider the following nightmare scenario? You save for months, peruse the forecourts, and buy the caravan of your dreams - only to find that one day your pride and joy is gone. The ugly business of caravan crime is on the increase. Last year, 3000 caravan thefts were reported, and that doesn’t take into account the other thefts that have not been reported.
Yet there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Etching security codes onto windows and registering with CriS could help you to get your stolen caravan back, but prevention is better than cure. So what first-line-of-defence products on the market can help you thwart the thieves?
Starting with wheelclamps and continuing next month with hitchlocks, we have put some of the best-known security devices to the test to find out just how much peace of mind you will be getting for your money.
THE FULL INFO AND OVERVIEW IN THE NOVEMBER 2004 ISSUE OF THE MAGAZINE.

Keep-It Premier Wheelclamp
Guide price £94.95
Tel 0870 444 2820 Web www.keep-it.co.uk
Fits 11-15in wheels. 155-225mm width
Sold Secure-approved? Yes – silver
Time withstood attack Two minutes, 22 seconds
Strengths Highly visible. Fits a good initial range of wheels.
Weakness Fitting was difficult.
Verdict This wheelclamp comes pre-assembled, so you just need to adjust it to fit your specific wheel. Initial fitting was a little bit fiddly, but once adjusted for a specific van, further fittings should pose no problems. Its flexibility also means it’s unlikely you’ll need to buy a new clamp if you change your van. This product withstood a noisy attack: the type that could draw attention to the theft. However, we would have liked to see more protection for the wheel nuts. The higher price might also deter some customers.

Stronghold Wheelclamp
Guide price £85
Tel 0871 282 8384 Web www.stronghold-security.com
Fits 10-14in wheels. 140-208mm width
Sold Secure-approved? No
Time withstood attack 44 seconds
Strengths Highly visible with wide adjustment.
Weakness Unclear instructions. Hard to fit. Many parts.
Verdict Our testers encountered real problems trying to assemble and fit Stronghold’s wheelclamp. The instructions were complicated and the diagrams provided weren’t very clear. However, the assembly for a specific wheel is a once-only operation. Sadly, the efforts we went to to fit this wheelclamp were not justified since the product was breached very quickly using a simple, quiet method. It’s also heavier than some other products on test here, and we’d have expected the extra weight to provide more resilience.

Make SAS HD 2000 Wheelclamp
Guide price £69.99 Tel 08700 727234 Web www.sasproducts.co.uk
Fits 12-15in wheels. 175mm width
Sold Secure-approved? No
Time withstood attack One minute, 41 seconds
Strengths Very clear instructions. Highly visible. Size. Ease of fit.
Weakness Will not fit alloy wheels.
Verdict The instructions left no doubt as to how to fit this product correctly: the clamp fixes to your wheel with a replacement bolt and two arms join around the tyre. It is easy to fit due partly to its curved back heel, which swings around easily to meet the lock. However, softer metal makes it more vulnerable. The method of attack was noisy, but it did not take very long.

Bulldog QD 44 Wheelclamp
Guide price £80 Tel 01952 728171 Web www.bulldogsecurity.com
Fits 14in wheels. 165-195mm width
Sold Secure-approved? Yes – silver
Time withstood attack Four minutes, 4 seconds
Strengths Well-finished. Simple instructions. Easy to fit.
Weakness Not as clearly visible as rivals.
Verdict Here, Bulldog offers its customers a more user-friendly product than the Titan. This is because the QD is lighter and easier to fit, which makes it ideal for touring. In fact, the QD is a cinch to fit thanks to clear instructions and few moving parts. Its resilient finish and smart manufacture made it difficult to breach, and although we did eventually prise it from the wheel, it took us a decent amount of time. The only criticisms we’d make is that it could be made even more visible with a coating of vibrantly coloured paint, and we’d like to see more protection of the wheel nuts.

SAS Guardian Wheelclamp
Guide price £99.99 Tel 08700 727234
Web www.sasproducts.co.uk
Fits 12-15in wheels. 175mm width
Sold Secure-approved? No
Time withstood attack Four minutes, 49 seconds
Strengths Highly visible. Compact. Well-made.
Weakness Relatively easy to false-latch.
Verdict This product withstood a noisy, strenuous attack and only just failed our five-minute benchmark. Fitting is similar to the other SAS product, but the Guardian does not bend around the wheel. It’s made from stronger metal, but this means it’s more awkward to fix – our testers false-latched it twice. More diagrams would also be handy. It’s made from different weights of metal that will cause thieves grief. Although we broke the lock, the clamp stuck to the wheel, thwarting theft even in its death throes. This is a great product, but despite what it says on the box, it no longer carries Sold Secure approval.

Bulldog Centaur Wheelclamp
Guide price £120 Tel 01952 728171
Web www.bulldogsecure.com
Fits 13-15in wheels.140-220mm width
Sold Secure-approved? Yes – gold
Time withstood attack More than five minutes
Strengths Highly visible. Good design. Strong.
Weakness Took a long time to fit. Bulky and heavy.
Verdict A real bruiser of a wheelclamp, the Centaur’s success reflects its smart, thief-proof design. A bright-red metal plate offers an extra layer of protection for the lock and working parts. It took our testers a while to fit due to its number of parts and its sheer size, but its instructions do include both photos and words. For when your caravan is in storage, the Centaur provides real peace of mind – but it doesn’t come cheap.
