1. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

 •  At Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes, Allied experts helped to shorten WWII by at least two years by deciphering top-secret Nazi codes.
Visitors can take a guided tour of 'Station X', follow the Cryptology Trail, see a replica of a code-breaking machine, inspect a German Enigma code machine and marvel at Colossus: the world's first computer.

2. NORTH YORKS

 •  This award-winning museum is based on a prisoner-of-war camp that was used to hold captured WWII Italian and German servicemen, who were then sent to work on local farms.
Thirty-five of the original huts have been fitted out to tell the story of 'The People's War', a history of life in Britain from 1939-45. Realistic tableaux, with moving figures and authentic sounds and smells, have been created to transport the visitor back in time.

3. CORNWALL

 •  What started out as the Cornwall Aircraft Park nearly 30 years ago has developed into a multi-faceted major theme park.
The young at heart can come here to experience some of the best white-knuckle rides in the county, while those who prefer history will delight in the Flambards Victorian Village and Britain in the Blitz exhibition. There are also exhibits dedicated to the bravery of Cornishmen during WWII.

4. KENT

 •  This museum is based in the original 1940s buildings of the closest RAF station to occupied France in WWII. Just ten minutes' flying time from German fighter airfields near Calais, the museum is now used to house the world's biggest collections of artefacts from the Battle of Britain, which took place in the skies above Kent and Sussex in 1940, including the finest collection of wreckage from both British and German aircraft that fought in the battle.

5. LINCOLNSHIRE

 •  This area is rich in WWII history. RAF Coningsby is home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors' Centre. A monument to the pilots of 617 Squadron, who flew the Dambuster missions in WWII, is close by in Woodhall Spa; and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby airfield has a WWII museum. Finally, Bomber County Aviation Museum at Hemswell boasts several original buildings and aircraft from the era.

6. NORFOLK

 •  WWII tanks, armoured cars, artillery and other military hardware make this the UK's biggest private collection of its type.
The 300-acre site, which was set up as a Territorial Army training camp in the 1930s, became an anti-aircraft artillery range after hostilities broke out in 1939.
The museum is based in the restored NAAFI building and also houses the Suffolk & Norfolk Yeomanry Collection and a Norfolk At War display, which chronicles the activities of the armed forces and local civilian organisations during WWII.

7. EAST LOTHIAN

Where to go: MUSEUM OF FLIGHT: THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL AVIATION

 •  This collection dates back to 1909 when the Royal Scottish Museum acquired a model of the Wright Brothers' biplane. It occupies part of a former RAF airfield now scheduled to be listed as an historic monument.
The museum has about 50 complete aircraft, including several examples from WWII. Special emphasis is placed upon planes built or flown in Scotland.

8. CORNWALL

 •  Porthcurno was where the international undersea telephone cables connecting Britain to the five continents came ashore. It achieved great importance as a nerve centre of wartime communications.
In 1941, tunnels were blasted through the eastern cliffs to provide bombproof protection for the cable transmission centre. They are now open to visitors who can see the original equipment and also try their hand at operating sections of it.
While much of the apparatus, dates back to the 1930s and earlier, it's in remarkably pristine condition.

9. SHROPSHIRE

 •  Three WWII hangars contain one of the UK's largest aviation collections with extensive displays, including more than 50 rockets and missiles. There are also aeroplane engines, including powerplants from early piston-engined aircraft to the modern jet.
British, German, Japanese and US warplanes are also housed here, including the Spitfire and Hurricane. But it's not just WWII on show; post-war bombers such as Vulcans, and Lightnings are on display,too.

10. SHROPSHIRE

 •  The five huge halls of the Tank Museum at Bovington house the world's largest and finest collection of armoured fighting vehicles, from the very first tanks which came into action towards the close of WWI to the latest main battle tank of the British army – the Challenger.
Nearly 300 vehicles from 26 countries are featured, and during school holidays the collection is brought to life with a 'Tanks in Action' live demonstrations, mock battles and vehicles rides.
