To stop the soap dish from accumulating soap build-up, put a square of towelling under the soap, then simply wash the towelling out when it gets too soapy.

To stop draughty gaps in porch or combination awnings, cover the poles nearest the tourer with foam pipe insulation. You can then tie the awning around the pipe and it will seal the padded edges of the awning to the caravan snugly.

To keep the water in your Aquaroll cool when the weather isn't, wrap the Aquaroll in a silver car windscreen cover – the type you place over your windows on a hot day. I hold it in place with a small piece of elastic around the middle. It's also a good idea to put another Aquaroll in the same cover. It means you'll always have a chilled supply, even when
a newly-filled Aquaroll is
still cooling down.

If you're worried about musty smells affecting clothes stored in the caravan's cupboards, put a tumble-dryer sheet (Bounce, or equivalent) on the shelf. Now your clothes and the whole cupboard will smell lovely – as will your caravan when you open the door. The scent lasts for over
a month and the warmer it gets the more perfume is released.

Here's how to stop plastic shower curtains sticking to your body when you're in the shower – basically by creating a cubicle-within-a-cubicle.
I stitched a 4cm-wide plastic curtain tape around the curtain at shoulder height. Inside this tape, I inserted an 8mm nylon tube (air pipe) about 4cm longer than the curtain width.
When the shower curtain ends are brought together you can push the tube overlaps inside the curtain tape to hold the curtain closed. It's
flexible, so it can be rolled up to save on space.

It can be difficult to keep towing mirrors in place, but my wife solved the problem by using some black 20mm Velcro on the top and bottom of the mirror housing. It kept the mirror perfectly in place for a full month last June with no sign of
slipping. It even survived a clip by an oncoming van in the Val de Cantobre.

To prevent creasing of your awning windows during storage, fold each panel into the width of the window, then roll up the awning around
a length of foam insulation pipe. The plastic will stay clear and smooth.

My Top Tip will solve all your
problems filling water barrels from site water taps. Cut a 55cm length of 40mm diameter white plastic water pipe (available from DIY stores) and another of 32mm diameter. Insert the 32mm inside the 40mm pipe. Hold the smaller-diameter pipe under the tap and insert the larger diameter in your Aquaroll, extending the smaller pipe to suit. If the tap is mounted very high up, or is at an awkward angle, the lower pipe can easily be lifted up, giving a maximum useable length of approximately one metre. This telescopic water filler is easily cleaned, is considerably more hygienic than the usual flexible hose, and allows the water tap to be turned on full-blast, thus saving filling time. What's more. it cost me only 67p to make.

While away in our caravan, we often use boil-in-the-bag rice for speed and convenience. This rice needs to be drained prior to serving. To avoid extra washing up, I do this by gently placing the bags over the kitchen taps. This allows them to drain nicely while I prepare the rest of the meal – and there's no
colander to wash up!

Of all the methods used to clean corrosion from 12N and 12S towing connectors on your caravan, I think that this one is by far the easiest and cheapest – and it's probably the most effective too.
Apply – wait for it – brown sauce, working it well into the depths of the pins and the sockets.
Leave well alone for 20-30 minutes while you go and have a coffee, then pour the hot water left in the kettle into the connectors to remove the sauce. Shake to dry, squirt with WD40 (optional, but wise) and you are done. Enjoy a full season with no dodgy light worries, as I have
for over 30 years.
