To prevent people from
stubbing their toes on exposed metal stakes, such as the ones used for awnings, I bought
a pair of brightly coloured armbands for about £5 from my local swimming pool. When inflated, they fit snugly over the offending stakes and provide a bright warning of danger, and also a cushion for toes should you be unlucky enough to trip over one.

Don't throw away the little packets of silica gel from shoe boxes and handbags. I put them in my fridge when it's not being used to soak up excess moisture. It helps to reduce any build-up of mould.

Squashed bugs can be the hardest things to remove from the outside of your van. But the most effective product I've found is Dettox Mould and Mildew Kitchen cleaner, which removes the bugs without the need for too much elbow grease.

Don't douse squeaky cupboard latches with WD40 – it's far too greasy. Instead, use a dry lubricant such as 3in1 Silicone Spray on them – this is much cleaner and a lot
less likely to drip muck onto the interior of your lockers.

Here's a tip for ralliers. I used to work on a caravan site and when the site was wet I would always
put a beaded seat cover instead of
a mat in front of my caravan door.
It would get the worst of the muck off my shoes but wouldn't make
the grass turn yellow. I'm sure most readers have got one lurking in some dark corner of the garage.

Don't fork out for special Thetford Seal Lubricant to service the blade and seals in your chemical toilet – you can use olive oil instead. But don't just take my word for it – Thetford even suggests it on its website.

If the storm straps on your awning vibrate in the wind, put a couple of twists in the strap from the corner
of the awning to the ground on each side. It really does stop the vibrations.

Here's a tip for those of you who like to caravan all year round. To save yourself fumbling around for the steadies bolt when you pitch up on a dark night, paint the bolt with
fluorescent paint. Simple!

Cut astroturf doormats to line your cupboards. Put them in place with the grassy side facing upwards
– the irregular surface stops objects rattling and sliding about in transit.

To stop the wasps ruining your
al fresco lunch, cut a plastic bottle in half, put a blob of jam in the base, then put the neck end upside down into the base. Cut two holes in the base, attach some string and hang
it from your awning. Watch the wasps head for the honeypot while you enjoy your lunch in peace.

We caravanners are always looking to save weight, so here's my tip. I always carry a bottle of Traffic Film Remover. It's what professionals use to valet cars, and it's great on absolutely anything. Used neat, it makes short work of greasy, oily spills. When diluted, you can use it on the van's bodywork, and as a very weak solution it removes most interior stains. You don't need much and it comes in a travel-friendly one-litre size for around £3. I won't leave home without it.

We've just seen 'No-Drip Brolly Bags' in an outdoor clothing brochure for £3.65. What's wrong with sticking your wet umbrella outside, upside down with a carrier bag tied round the top?
