PEUGEOT 307BACK
ON THE ROAD

Performance ***
The 307 offers petrol engines of 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 litres and 1.4, 1.6 and two 2.0 turbodiesels. The 2.0-litre 138bhp petrol engine is a lively performer, but needs to be worked hard. The 110bhp 1.6-litre is the pick of the diesels.
Ride & handling ***
Driving enthusiasts could have a ball in the most humdrum 306 thanks to the agility of its chassis. The 307 - taller, heavier and with different rear suspension - is lazier to respond and gets blown about more in crosswinds, although it’s safer on the limit. The ride is firmer but mostly compliant.
Refinement ***
The stiff shell and suspension and thorough soundproofing of the 307 combine to shut out most road noise, and the HDi diesel engine is largely inaudible unless being worked hard. The high, wide body and massive flat front screen stir up some wind noise at speed, however. Most controls are smooth to use.

OWNERSHIP

Buying & owning ***
You shouldn't have to twist the salesman's arm very far to achieve a sizeable discount - use the What Car? Target Price as a guide. Running costs could be lower, despite some models consuming less fuel than the 306. Expect to lose just over half of the new value on most models over three years.
Quality & reliability *
The 307's cabin features nicely textured plastics and classy trim, but the quality doesn’t run deep enough. The 2005 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey revealed too many flaws such as troublesome heating and ventilation systems and a high number of mechanical and engine faults. Owners were also frustrated by the standard of service from Peugeot dealers.
Safety & security ***
Six airbags and anti-lock brakes with electronic distribution of stopping power and emergency brake assist are standard on all cars, and the headrests and pedals are designed to minimise crash injuries. Even the hazard warning lights come on in an emergency stop. All models have deadlocks

IN THE CABIN

Behind the wheel ***
The 307’s semi-MPV style creates plenty of room for driver and front passenger, but imposes a long dash and steep nose which hamper forward visibility for parking. The seats are firm and supportive with a good range of adjustment, the dash is orderly and legible, and cubbies are numerous.
Space & practicality ***
The MPV-like styling of the 307 doesn’t translate into MPV space. That’s the fault of the rear roofline, which denies tall adults sufficient headroom, although knee space and cabin width are good. Usual small hatch split-fold rear seats allow a well shaped and sizeable boot to be expanded, but the width of the opening restricts what will fit in.
Equipment ****
All 307s are well equipped. Standard features include a fully adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel, plus power-assisted steering, remote central locking and electric front windows. A CD player and wheel-mounted stereo controls feature on all but the cheapest of versions.
