Performance ****
The range-topping Ibiza wears Seat's new FR badge - which stands for Formula Racing. The 148bhp turbocharged 1.8-litre engine in the petrol FR provides plenty of punch, while the 1.9 turbodiesel version is almost as quick but more economical.
Ride & handling ****
Seat stiffened the Ibiza's chassis on the FR model and added bigger 16-inch wheels, and the car turns in sharply and grips strongly. However, the FR can feel unsettled on all but the smoothest of surfaces (a trait shared by other Ibizas).
Refinement ***
Engine noise is reasonably well contained, although the diesel makes itself heard under full throttle. The firm ride means road and suspension noise can become tiresome over very poor surfaces, while wind roar is noticeable at motorway speeds.

Buying & owning ***
Prices are competitive to other warm supermini rivals, and residuals should be above average. The petrol engine returns a respectable 36mpg while the frugal diesel manages 55mpg. Emissions and insurance costs are modest.
Quality & reliability ****
The Ibiza uses the latest VW Group supermini platform. The controls have a solid, precise feel and the materials are sturdy. The mechanicals have already seen use in other VW Group cars and should be dependable.
Safety & security ****
FR models come with twin front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control. Security provision is good, although our security experts were able to overcome the door locks when the standard Ibiza was put to the test.

Behind the wheel ****
Most drivers will find it easy to get comfortable at the Ibiza's helm. The height-adjustable driver's seat is supportive, and the steering wheel adjusts for both reach and rake. The dash layout is clear, simple and unfussy, and there's plenty of headroom up-front. FR models gain titanium-coloured trim and leather-trimmed gearlever and steering wheel.
Space & practicality ****
Although room is good up-front, the rear seats are not so accommodating. Because of the curved roofline, adults won't get as much headroom as they would in many rivals, but legroom is still adequate. The 60/40 split rear seat folds to create extra luggage space. The boot is a decent size, but has a high load lip.
Equipment ****
Standard equipment on the FR is generous and includes a CD player, climate control, electric windows and door mirrors. A twin chrome exhaust, unique 16-inch alloy wheels and honeycomb grille mark the FR models out from the standard Ibiza.
