Performance ****
The Astra is a strong performer thanks to some of the best engines in the class; the 1.8, in particular, has GTi-baiting pace. They are also smooth and refined, and give good fuel economy. The line-up includes a 1.4, 1.6, 1.7 and 2.0-litre turbodiesels and a 2.0-litre in the sporty SRi.
Ride & handling ****
The Astra is well controlled and entertaining to drive. It is unaffected by bumps at any speed, regardless of whether it's one-up or carrying a full load. The steering is well weighted with good feel.
Refinement ***
Newer rivals relegate the Astra to the middle of the league table. Its strong engines now seem a little noisy and some road rumble and wind rustle infiltrate the cabin at higher cruising speeds. Otherwise, the cabin is free from rattles and it's comfortable for long journeys.

Buying & owning ***
The Astra does not hang on to its value like a VW Golf. However, in all other respects it is a dependable and affordable car to run. The 1.7 CDTi turbodiesel meets the most stringent emissions regulations and is therefore exempt from the 3% company car tax penalty that is applied to some diesels.
Quality & reliability ***
There's little to suggest the Astra will be anything other than doggedly reliable. Strong, proven engines rarely go wrong. The cabin may be dull but it is as robust as any, although it does not have the tactile finishes of a Ford Focus or VW Golf.
Safety & security ***
Every model has twin front airbags, but a car in this class should also list anti-lock brakes and side airbags as standard safety features. Security provision is reasonable and includes deadlocks and a visible VIN, but our attack-testers broke in within 40 seconds. The windows aren't etched and an alarm costs extra.
|
Behind the wheel ***
The Astra's dash is sensibly laid out but oh-so dull. Sombre colours do not help its cause. Most models have standard two-way steering and driver's seat-height adjustment and there's good storage space around the driver.
Space & practicality ***
There is plenty of space in the front and sufficient room in the rear for three adults. Alhough the saloon can't match the practicality of its hatch sibling, the boot is a good size with a decent-sized opening and split-fold rear seats to extend the luggage area.
Equipment ***
Entry-level Envoys are low on kit, but a rear three-point centre seatbelt, twin front airbags and remote central locking are standard. Move up to LS and Club trims and you add air-conditioning, while Elegance models get alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes and electric rear windows.
