Each month, we’ll provide you with everything you need to know about where to go and what to see throughout the year, so you can get planning for a brilliant 2022! We’re now sharing our April touring tips…

Why not plan a trip abroad?

Foreign travel can be a relaxing adventure in a caravan. Only a relatively small number of UK caravanners tour abroad – the rest just don’t know what they’re missing!

Towing in France is a doddle, with much quieter roads. You’ll find stunning countryside and coastline to explore – as well as fabulous towns and cities.

The French flag

A great starting point is a trip to Normandy, so why not go to learn more about the events of D-Day?

Take Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to Caen and you’ll find some great campsites just a few miles from the port. We have stayed at Camping La Vallée near Houlgate, Camping Hautes Coutures at Bénouville and CAMC-affiliated Camping Côte de Nacre. All recommended!

Once there, you can immerse yourself in the culture with some top-notch cuisine and the local tipple, Calvados.

We can highly recommend Casserole et Bouchons, in Ouistreham. Ignore the décor and just savour the excellent fixed-price lunch menu. Two can feast for around £25.

D-Day memorials

The must-see list includes the Mémorial de Caen museum; the Merville Battery; Le Grand Bunker, in Ouistreham; Pegasus Bridge, café and museum; the Longues-sur-Mer Battery and numerous memorials around the region, including the new British Normandy Memorial.

Pegasus Bridge is the place to soak up the atmosphere, and there’s lots to see. Other attractions include the famous Bayeux Tapestry in Caen.

For something different…

Puy du Fou is an incredible theme park near Nantes, northern France. The park has a Roman amphitheatre with a live gladiator show; vast castle scenes with battling knights; dancing horses; jaw-dropping light shows and the unforgettable Bal des Oiseaux Fantômes bird show (our favourite).

Perfect pitch

Sunnydale Farm Touring Park near Portsmouth is ideal for a stopover before catching the 8.15am ferry to Caen, or for exploring Hampshire.

Now’s the time to refresh your towing skills

Both of the major Clubs offer brilliantly informative towing courses at cost-effective prices. They are vital for new caravanners, but experienced tow car drivers can always benefit from refreshing their towing skills, too.

As well as the main content, the expert tutors have loads of tricks and tips to improve your towing experience.

Refresh your towing skills

These courses take place at locations all around the country and typically cost around £150 for a full day. Don’t forget to mention attendance at a towing course to your insurance provider – it might bag you a discount.
