Buying a Pay As You Go mobile phone for the kids, or just as an emergency spare to keep in the car glove compartment, just got a little cheaper.

Asda has cut the price of two mobile phones in its Asda Mobile line-up as part of a January promotion and they now cost just £12.50 a piece.

Neither mobile is anything to get particularly excited about, but both are compact handsets with a colour screen.

The T-Mobile Zest II has a built-in (but low quality) camera, with a talk time of up six hours and a 240-hour standby time.

The Nokia 1616 doesn’t have a camera, but does have an eight-hour talk time and a 540-hour standby time.

Asda’s cheapest PAYG tariffs give either 200 text messages, or 100 minutes and text messages, for £5, which is ideal for keeping in touch with errant offspring. The only catch is that top-ups only last for 30 days, but they can be bought from the mobile phone at any time.
