Sky has announced a new set-top box for HD viewers, designed for use with its Multiroom subscription.

The SkyHD box is a single tuner device with no PVR function — it can be used to watch Sky HD channels, but not record them. The STB does still have the usual programme planner, however, and reminders can be set for programmes.

Caravanners who currently switch their Sky+HD box to the van for use with an HDTV, however, should be well served by the new SkyHD box. Its compact size (273 x 204 x 52mm and less than 2kg) makes it ideal for caravan use and it’s available for free with a new multiroom subscription (or £49 thereafter).

Sky multiroom does cost an extra £10.25 a month, however, along with a second £10.25 HD subscription — and paying an extra £20.50 a month is a bit steep just to enjoy Sky TV in HD when on holiday.

Still, for anyone who’s willing to pay up for the new SkyHD STB for use at home anyway, its size does make it a more portable option — and the lack of an internal hard drive and single tuner will reduce its power consumption, too.
