OUR COLLEAGUES OVER at Autocar have announced their award winners from the magazine’s current crop of long-term test cars, including the BMW 520d Touring.

The BMW won the 1725-1899kg weight category at the Towcar Awards earlier this year and now Autocar has named it their best long-termer for ‘Family Life’.

Editor Jim Holder reckons the BMW is “spacious, upmarket, refined, economical, superior to drive and reassuringly expensive to buy.” Personally I’ve never found being expensive a reassuring quality, but as a Stella Artois drinker I think I know what Jim means.

Being a magazine for the car enthusiast, Autocar‘s 17-strong fleet bears little resemblance to the typical cars you’ll see towing. However, there is one other caravan-friendly car picking up an award. The Range Rover TDV8 has been named best long-termer for ‘Long Distance Touring’. Of course, the Range Rover is even pricier than the BMW, but it is a very impressive car and tows superbly.

The magazine’s overall favourite? The £170,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. I don’t think Santa will bring any of us one of those this Christmas, no matter how good we’ve been.
