Expanding caravans and motorhomes are nothing new, but pop-out side sections tend to be ways to make already enormous vehicles even larger, and so they’re not always ideal for use on UK roads, let alone campsites.

Not so the DoubleBack. Based on the long-wheelbase VW Transporter 2.0TDi, this motorhome instead has an expanding rear section that simply adds to the vehicle’s length.

The expanding section is electrically powered and fully extends in 45 seconds. It increases the overall vehicle length by 2m, which is enough room for a double bed.

The section can extend with a load of up to 300kg too, so there’s no need to empty it between pitches — although keeping it fully laden will obviously reduce the amount of space in the back of the ‘van when on the move. The rear door still operates normally, though.

The DoubleBack is built in South Wales and prices start from £54,950 OTR for a brand-new VW Transporter.
