Full-scale renovation projects aren’t for the faint hearted, but what about building a caravan from scratch? From wood? When you’re 17 years old? That’s just what Austin Hay has done.

Austin started the project as a more affordable way to move out of his parents’ house in the US. Hand-built on a timber frame, the 130 square foot ‘trailer’ cost $12,000 (around £7,500) in materials and resulted in very little waste — as this fascinating interview shows:
