We’ve written about the need to properly configure security settings on a Facebook account many times, not least because Facebook has the frustrating tendency to change its default security settings for the worse.

We suspect this latter annoyance is unlikely to change, but Facebook is now taking steps to educate new users about its various security features.

The changes come at the suggestion of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner’s Office — Facebook’s global HQ is based in Ireland for tax reasons.

New users (and there are still some 6 billion people on Earth yet to join Facebook) will now be taken on a tour of the service’s security settings when they sign up for an account.

The one billion existing users can see the same information on a Facebook blog page, although the screenshots are still far too small to be of any practical use.
