Škoda has launched the second-generation Kodiaq SUV. With new looks inside and out, a plug-in hybrid and improved entertainment, it offers tough competition for the Kia Sorento and the Volkswagen Tiguan. We’ve been driving the most powerful diesel, the 193hp 4×4. It seems tailor-made for towing, especially as some manufacturers are becoming reluctant to build diesels.
The best SUVs for towing are always going to be good at pulling a tourer, and in the case of the Kodiaq, it tows very well indeed. The 2.0-litre TDI engine is every bit as strong as its on-paper credentials suggest, and the Škoda briskly pulled a 1250kg caravan up to 60mph. Stable as well as strong, the Kodiaq makes a capable all-weather tow car.
The best caravan tow cars will not just be excellent at towing but will also be good for every day use. In the case of the Kodiaq, it drives well every day, too, with a comfortable ride and a quiet cabin. It’s not as sporty as the new Volkswagen Tiguan, but the Škoda is lighter on its feet than the Kia Sorento.
Inside, the Kodiaq has space for five or seven, depending on the model. The first two rows are spacious, although headroom and legroom are much tighter in the third row. The dashboard is more modern, with an excellent touchscreen infotainment system.
If you are considering making the switch from diesel, the new plug-in hybrid model has an official electric range of over 70 miles, although it only provides five seats.
