A woman who left an old dilapidated caravan on an Oxfordshire road for over a year is being forced to pay over £1300 after repeated requests to have it removed were ignored.
The incident, which could see you wonder “can you park a caravan on the street?“, saw an abandoned Abbey Stafford caravan in Howard Cornish Road in Marcham first brought to the attention of officers from Vale of White Horse District Council in June last year.
Despite several attempts by the council to engage with the owner, the caravan remained in place, deteriorating and causing more complaints from local residents.
Enforcement officers issued several warning notices and imposed a £200 fixed penalty notice, but all these were ignored.
So officers arranged for the caravan to be removed and for the case to be taken to court.
At Reading Magistrates’ Court on 5 June, Ms Daiene Ferreira, 41, of the Grove, Abingdon, was proven to have abandoned the vehicle. She was ordered to pay a £220 fine and £1081 costs. She was, however, tried in absentia.
Councils have the ability, ultimately, to remove caravans that are causing a nuisance to local residents, although cases are usually resolved before the matter gets as far as the court.
It was only last month that Lancashire police removed a caravan that was left blocking the pavement, which had forced people in the road to get past it.
