We all have fond memories of our childhood holidays, be it a tour of Cornwall or playing a game of rounders with vacation friends. Now, after polling 2,000 adults, a study from Park Leisure has revealed the nation’s favourite childhood holiday memories in the UK – with nearly two in five (39%) including staying in a caravan.
The most popular choice proved to be sitting by the beach eating fish and chips, with 52% saying this was another of their favourite childhood holiday memories.

Trips to the seaside were rated highly all round – and not just for the food. In fact, 47% said they loved paddling in the sea, while for 41%, it was visiting the amusement arcades – after all, who can resist the penny machines.
The more simple pleasures of a holiday also factored in, with 44% saying they loved going for walks and 32% enjoying picnics.
The nation’s top 10 favourite memories of holidays in the UK are:
- Eating fish and chips at the beach – 52%
- Paddling in the sea – 47%
- Going for walks – 44%
- Playing in amusement arcades at the seaside – 41%
- Staying in a caravan – 39%
- Picnics – 32%
- Exploring rock pools – 29%
- Playing games with family and friends – 26%
- Making new friends – 20%
- Barbeques – 17%
Lisa Williams, Director of Marketing and Holiday Sales at Park Leisure, said: “Many of us look back on childhood holidays with great affection, and it’s been lovely reflecting on all these happy memories.”
“Many people will have explored new corners of the UK over the last year or so, and hopefully families will now continue to holiday on our own shores, so the next generations can enjoy similar memories in the future.”
