The Jubilee bank holiday weekend presents a great opportunity for caravan owners to get in their vans and head to one of the country’s best caravan parks, but if you are, it could be worth planning your journey carefully to avoid the traffic, as RAC Breakdown data has revealed there will be an estimated 19.5m leisure trips taken by car.

A study of the driving plans of 1,460 drivers has allowed the RAC to predict there will be 3.6m leisure trips made on Friday (3 June) along, with another 3.3m anticipated on Thursday.

Both Saturday and Wednesday will see 2.6m drivers take to the roads, while the whole five day period will see another extra five million journeys taken at some point.

Transport experts INRIX has said conditions are likely to be at their worst each morning, and is recommending drivers to either start off earlier or delay their trips until later in the day to avoid this.

The routes that have been earmarked as roads with potential delays are the M25, southbound M5, A303 and A720 Edinburgh city bypass.

RAC traffic spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Drivers clearly see a double bank holiday this close to the summer as a gift with so millions eager to make the most of it – although many appear keen to keep their car journeys short, perhaps mixing a daytrip or two with a Jubilee celebration at home. The fact the bank holidays coincide with the end of half-term in many places has the potential to put some extra pressure on the road network, so planning a journey carefully is important to beat the worst of any queues.”

“The best way for drivers to avoid breaking down this week is to check over their vehicles before setting out – yet our research shows less than a fifth do this routinely.”
