ALL FOUR CARS rated in the latest round of Euro NCAP crash tests have achieved five stars.
The Renault Zoe, Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Auris and RAV4 all earned the top rating for overall safety.
Although all four performed very well, the highest mark went to the Octavia, with an overall rating of 93%. The Auris scored 92%, while the RAV4 and Zoe both scored 89% overall.
Skoda was also praised for the Octavia’s Front Assist, Lane Assist, Multi Collision Brake and Crew Protect Assistant safety kit. Front Assist is a radar-based system which slows the car down or even stops it completely if the driver fails to respond when the car ahead slows. Lane Assist helps the driver stay in their intended lane, while Multi Collision Brake applies the brakes after an impact to cut the chances of further crashes or at least reduce the speed at which they take place. Crew Protect Assistant prepares the vehicle and its restraint systems if sensors detect that a collision is likely.
It’s great to see so many cars achieving high marks. However, it does beg the question whether the criteria for scoring five-stars needs to get tougher so car buyers can more easily choose the very safest cars.
