Do you find yourself needing an estate car, but really wanting a coupé instead? That’s the circle Audi is trying to square with the new A5 Avant.

Style may be subjective, but we’re struggling to think of a better-looking estate tow car than the A5 Avant. The downside is that it’s not the roomiest car for people or luggage. A boot capacity of 476 litres is nothing special for a car of this size and price.

But the target market probably doesn’t care that you can buy more practical estate cars for a whole lot less. They’ll be looking for caravan tow cars which have a high-tech, well-finished cabin. And they’ll appreciate the car’s lively performance from the 204hp petrol engine. It’s certainly punchy enough if you’re sensible with your car/caravan matching.

We found the car to be stable while towing an Elddis Avante 462, borrowed from Raymond James Caravans in Atherstone. Without the caravan, the A5 Avant is lively and agile. The BMW 3 Series is a more rewarding driver’s car, but not by a huge margin.

The trade-off for sharp handling is a firm ride. It’s not a bone-shaker, but it’s certainly at the firm end of sporty.

In Edition 1 spec, the Audi A5 Avant is very well equipped, but the price is high.

See what I made of another car I reviewed recently, the Land Rover Defender 110 D350 Sedona Edition.

Technical spec

  • Price: From £54,775

  • 85% match: 1454kg
