LAST MONTH’S bad weather brought the country to a near-standstill but many caravanners just carried on regardless.

We had regular reports from readers enjoying a spot of winter touring and making the most of campsites that weren’t heaving with the high season hordes.

And our forums were pretty busy, too, with one thread, “Where are all the winter caravanners hiding out?”, proving very topical. Posts suggested that for many of the caravan fraternity, touring is a year-round pastime and is certainly not just for the summer months. Get involved with the conversation here. Whiteout photos

At the bottom of this story, there’s a gallery of photos from the recent whiteout (from left to right):

Mike Grief from Kings Lynn made the trip up to York for a pre-Christmas shopping trip. He stayed at Rowntree Park Caravan Club site at York and had to extend his stay by an extra day, as it was the first opportunity he had to get the van off the site.

Paddy and Ian Rogers from Sheffield stayed on the Black Horse Caravan Club Site near Folkestone during the first week in December, when the first big dump of snow fell. They reported being very snug inside their van and had a great time, despite the challenging conditions.

Alan Walne submitted this picture of his caravan in storage. He’d paid a visit to make sure all the taps were open. “Driving through the virgin snow was fun, even without the van on the back,” he said.

Back to Mike Grief at Rowntree Park for the next image, where he’s pictured carrying water. He says he managed to keep his Lunar Quasar 462 warm, even though a few pipes in it froze. The experience hasn’t dimmed his enthusiasm for low-season touring, however, as Mike has already booked another stay at the site for the same time later this year.

“York is a great place to be and with the site so close to the city there was always something to do, whatever the weather,” he said. “OK, for one day we had to dress in full wet weather gear but with pubs and coffee shops aplenty it was easy to get a warming drink or soup to keep the inner man satisfied!”
