TOYOTA’S NEW SMALL hatchback, the second-generation Auris, will be one of the stars of the Paris motor show next month.

The new car promises to be roomier, more economical and cleaner than the car it replaces. Expect petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, as well as sharper styling than the neat but uninspired looks of the current Auris.

Toyota is aware that the lacklustre driving experience is a weakness of the current car, and promises the new model will be much more engaging.

The perceived quality of the cabin is another area in which Toyota is keen to improve. As well as a more upmarket finish, Toyota says there’s an extra 20mm of kneeroom in the rear and luggage space is up six litres to 360 litres.

Every version of the Auris will be made in Toyota’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire.

Expect the car to appear in UK showrooms early next year. More detail on pricing, specifications and performance will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
