The Toyota Land Cruiser has long been a byword for go-anywhere dependability. Stylish? No. Reliable? Yes.
With its new model, the brand aims to deliver both. The looks are inspired by Land Cruiser 40 of the 1960s, much the same way that the Defender celebrates the original Land Rover.
Just as it should be, every Land Cruiser is a proper 4×4 for towing. With a low-ratio box and locking differentials, a spot of overnight rain on a grassy pitch won’t stretch its capabilities.
It’s on Tarmac where previous Land Cruisers have been a little disappointing. The new car isn’t as polished on the road as a Land Rover Defender, but it’s a big step forward compared with earlier generations. The ride can be unsettled at times, but it’s not uncomfortable, and the car handles neatly enough so long as you drive with restraint.
Inside, there’s room for seven. The third row is a little tight on space, but there’s plenty of room up front and in the middle.
The dash looks a little old-fashioned, but ease of use benefits from having proper buttons for the heating and ventilation.
For those who are looking at buying a new car, the Land Cruiser is by no means a cheap option, as it’s priced at £74,995. However, it does come very well equipped as standard.
