Fans of Volkswagen could be interested to hear about the launch of the updated plug-in hybrid version of the practical Multivan MPV, the VW Multivan eHybrid 4Motion.
The plug-in can travel up to 59 miles on electricity alone in official tests. It also has four-wheel drive, which should appeal to those who like caravanning in winter.
However, there is a premium of almost £6000 to pay over the equivalent diesel. That might give private buyers pause for thought, although company car drivers will benefit from low benefit-in-kind tax rates thanks to the car’s low emissions.
The eHybrid 4Motion has a towing capacity of 1600kg. That’s down on the diesel’s 2000kg, but high enough for many family tourers to make suitable matches.
Kerbweights start from 2391kg, so the Multivan is heavier than some of the best 4x4s for towing, which bodes well for stability while towing.
The MPV is available in two different lengths. The longer of the two has more space and costs just under £1500 more than the standard-length model.
Like the rest of the range, the Multivan eHybrid 4Motion is available in two specifications. Life is the more basic of the two, and comes with manual air conditioning, 16-inch alloys, a 10-inch infotainment system and seven seats. Style spec upgrades include three-zone climate control, heated front seats and 17-inch alloys.
For those who could be interested in an older model, see what we made of the 2023 Volkswagen Multivan 1.4 eHybrid 218PS Style DSG.
If you’re still not sure whether you want a mild, plug-in hybrid or a full hybrid either, take a look at what we have to say about the different types of hybrid car, too.
