OUR FRIENDS FROM What Car? have announced their Used Car of the Year, although we can’t see many Practical Caravan readers towing with one.

The Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 5dr picked up the top prize. With a legal towing limit of just 600kg it’s more of a second car for caravanners than a tool for towing, even if you own a very light tourer.

However, there are plenty of other potential tugs among the winners chosen by our sister magazine. The Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI Match 5dr takes the honours in the small family car class. What Car?‘s used car experts reckon a 2010/60-plate car will cost £12,870 from a dealer.

We’re more familiar with the 2.0-litre diesel, but the 1.6 has 104bhp and 185lb.ft of torque enough to make a decent fist of towing a lightweight tourer while giving excellent solo economy. Official figures promise 62.8mpg.

The Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Zetec 5dr is What Car?‘s favourite used family car. No arguments from our side of the office. The Mondeo makes an excellent towcar and a price of just £7090 from a dealer for a 2008/08-plate car looks pretty tempting, especially when you consider that the new equivalent costs three times as much.

The VW Passat Estate and Ford S-Max are both What Car? winners which perform as tow cars, too.
