    First look review, August 2009 For regular readers of Practical Caravan, Bailey’s GT60 range of caravans needs little introduction. It appeared at the same time as the Ranger Series 5 in the summer of 2008 and immediately laid claim to the mid-range of UK caravan market. Effectively a better equipped version of the Ranger, it has quickly become a favourite with upgraders and first timers alike. On our recent reader rally to Holland, we put the 510-4 through its paces.

    Pitching & Setting-up

    In terms of equipment, there is nothing to touch the GT60 at the price. A quick look around the outside shows a directional TV aerial, shock absorbers, alloy wheels and stabiliser among the standard kit. Inside, the MP3/CD player and microwave oven are the main indicators. At £12,295, it’s around £750 cheaper than similarly equipped rivals from Swift and Elddis. In terms of usability, the Ranger does little wrong. Drains, corner steadies, lockers and services are easy to access and operate.

    On closer inspection, there are places where cost controls can be seen. The seat bases have no latches to hold them upright for loading and the roof level lockers feel insubstantial. The plastic catches which secure the doors closed have drawn criticism from some buyers, but they lock positively and give a fuss free appearance to the front of the locker doors.

    Bailey is also proud that Ranger models have been tested by the FIRA furniture testing laboratory to ensure the cabinet work hangs together after heavy use.

    Living

    The front lounge is a large comfortable space, with very little to complain about. The CD player can be reached from the seat for retuning or reloading too and the corner mounting means it doesn’t rob space from the roof lockers.

    Kitchen

    The side kitchen is hard to fault. Two large roof level lockers sit either side of the microwave. The workspace is large enough to prepare a family meal and storage is acceptable too, with two drawers above the heater and a tall cupboard adjacent to cope with breakfast cereal boxes.

    The dining table is stored in a pedestal unit on the offside of the caravan but this has no room for anything else. We used one of the roof lockers above the side dinette for food storage.

    Washroom

    The washroom is enormous and feels far plusher than the GT60’s price tag suggests.

    Beds

    At night, the single bunks at the side are adequate for kids and as easy to assemble as any rollover bunk. The main bed is large, flat and comfortable and well lit enough for night time reading. The centre chest is ideal for spectacles, tea cups and reading books.

    Storage
