THE ACCORD came closer than any other car to snatching class honours from the Golf Estate. In some respects, it’s the better car.

The engine is more refined, although it’s not as hushed as the Laguna’s diesel. Performance is strong, too, although the 30-60mph time of 17 seconds lags behind the Renault. Sixth gear is a little high for towing, though – the Accord usually felt happier in fifth. The gearshift is swift and slick.

Stable and secure

Through the lane-change test the Honda felt stable and secure, although the caravan showed very high G-force readings. In less dramatic manoeuvres car and van were firmly planted to the road.

On the 1-in-6 hill, the handbrake held first time, and the Accord climbed the slope with just a little clutch slip in the dry, although it struggled in the damp.

All but two items from our selection of luggage could be fitted in the boot, and the fitment of Trailer Stability Assist was also welcome.

The biggest issue is price. At over £26,000, it’s the most expensive car in this class by a street. That’s a serious concern when the VW Golf and Renault Laguna are so capable for so much less.
