I’VE SPENT THE past couple of days driving superminis. Given that these aren’t the kind of vehicles you see towing caravans very often, it’s a size of car I rarely get to drive.

The cars in question were the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208. I enjoyed driving both, in particular the Ford. It was brilliant fun; nimble but comfortable, and surprisingly quiet at speed. The engine a 1.5-litre diesel may have only had 74bhp and 136lb ft of torque, but its performance bellied these modest numbers. So much so, it set me wondering if it wouldn’t make a half-decent tow car.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting the Fiesta could cope with your average four-berth tourer. For starters the legal towing limit of just 750kg rules out conventional caravans. But that’s not to say there’s nothing the Ford could tow.

The intriguing Going Cockpit S has a Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass of 750kg, and any number of trailer tents weigh even less.

We’ve booked some small tow cars for the Tow Car Awards testing in April. Having really enjoyed driving superminis this week, I’m now looking forward to towing with them.
