MG has updated its HS family SUV with design upgrades and two new specification levels.

The range starts from £23,555, considerably less than most rivals of similar size and performance. That buys the entry-level SE model, powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine.

This version weighs 1495kg, giving an 85% match of 1271kg. That’s well within the maximum towing figure of 1750kg.

As well as the 162hp turbocharged petrol model, the MG is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, providing a combined petrol-electric output of 258hp. The plug-in hybrid tow car pushes the kerbweight as high as 1775kg for top-spec cars. That gives an 85% match figure just over the 1500kg maximum towing weight.

The petrol model is available with a choice of manual or automatic transmission, while the hybrid version is only sold as an auto.

SE models come with LED headlights, air conditioning, sat nav, rear parking camera with sensors, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and a leather steering wheel as standard. Trophy specification adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting, rear privacy glass and an uprated stereo. All versions come with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty.
