Subaru has opened order books for the new Crosstrek SUV. Taking the place of the XV in showrooms, the Crosstrek has a stiffer chassis than the old model, which contributes to improved dynamic performance and ride quality. All models are four-wheel drive and have plentiful ground clearance.

The best SUVs for towing a caravan will make excellent options for pulling our tourers. In the case of the Subaru Crosstrek, it has just one engine, a 136hp 2.0-litre petrol with mild-hybrid assistance. No manual gearbox is available – every version comes with Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.

Drivers’ choice of suitable caravans is restricted by the 1270kg maximum towing figure, which is less than the 85% match usually recommended for safe and stable towing. That puts the Crosstrek at a disadvantage compared with many SUVs of similar size which are approved to tow heavier caravans, something that could factor in when caravanners are choosing the right tow car.

Two specifications are available. The entry-level Limited costs £34,290 and comes with 17-inch alloys, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, 60/40 split and folding back seats, and Eyesight driver assistance features.

The higher-spec Touring costs £36,290, with upgrades including 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, powered driver’s seat adjustment including lumbar support, and USBs for rear-seat passengers.

See what I thought when I took a first look at the Renault Scenic E-Tech recently too, a smart option with an SUV bodystyle.
