Last time I towed with the Suzuki Grand Vitara I had our Sprite Musketeer TD on the back, writes Alyson Warnock. The Sprite was a light 77% match for the Suzuki and was a bit fidgety, but that’s mainly because of the long towbar required to get past the rear-mounted spare wheel. I was looking forward to seeing how the Suzuki performed with a heavier van on the back.

The Bailey Pegasus 554 that I took on my trip to the Wye Valley was a higher 88% match for the Suzuki. As expected, the extra weight meant it felt more stable. The Suzuki’s ride is firm, so the movement of the van travels through the car. The heavier van meant this was a smoother trip.

A couple of weeks after my outing to the Wye Valley I ran into a problem. When I went to hitch up our Pegasus again, this time to take it to the Reader Rally at Stowford Farm Meadows, I realised that part of the Suzuki’s electrics was missing. It was the plastic case that holds all the shafts in position on the 13-pin plug, and try as I might, I just couldn’t get the pins on the van’s electrics to line up. [tl:gallery size=266×200]

With the van’s brake lights and indicators not working, I could not tow anywhere safely. Luckily, my colleague Claudia was willing to share her van with me at the rally, so I didn’t miss any of the fun.

We need to get the Suzuki’s electrics fixed before we can tow with it again. We’ll keep you updated.
