We’ve already written about tyres that can inflate themselves, but now it looks like cars of the future will run on wheels that don’t inflate at all.

Tyre manufacturer Bridgestone is working on a non-pneumatic tyre that uses a complex structure of load-bearing spokes made from thermoplastic resin, which means they never need inflating and are impossible to puncture.

The aim appears to be to develop a tyre that can be more easily recycled than the current kind, but Bridgestone is still at the concept stage and there’s no news on when — or if — the plastic tyre will ever make it into production.

You can read a little more about the tyre over at Bridgestone’s Japanese web site, complete with translation into English.
