Kia has added the EV5 to its growing range of electric SUVs, joining the likes of the EV6 and EV9.
While the new model is similar in size to the petrol and hybrid-powered Sportage, there’s more passenger space inside the EV5. That’s especially true of the rear seats, where there’s much more legroom than in the Sportage. The flat floor adds space for everyone’s feet.
Up front, the driving position is comfy with plenty of adjustment. The digital display and the infotainment system effectively form one large screen. It’s easy to use but the heating and ventilation controls are obscured by the steering wheel.
Every EV5 has the same electric powertrain, with a 214bhp motor driving the front wheels and an 81.4kWh battery. The 0-62mph time of 8.4 seconds is quite tame, but the EV5 feels quicker thanks to the instant response from the electric motor.
Towing capacity can sometimes be an issue with electric tow cars. A kerbweight of over two tonnes bodes well for stability while towing, although it’s a shame the towing capacity is restricted to 1200kg. The more expensive EV6 can tow up to 1800kg.
This reservation aside, we’re impressed with the Kia’s price, specification, and roomy cabin.
If you’re still in the process of choosing the ideal towing car for your needs, don’t miss what I had to say about what to look for in a tow car, either.
