Kia has updated the ever-popular Sportage with new looks and more power. The engine line-up has been simplified, with a straight choice between a 147hp petrol and a 235hp full hybrid from launch. Fans of plug-in hybrid tow cars will be pleased to hear that by the time you read this, one will have joined the range too.
For everyday driving, the more affordable petrol model will meet the needs of many buyers. It also has a higher towing capacity (1650kg) than the hybrid (1510kg). Even so, the hybrid is likely to be more popular with caravanners.
Not only is it much quicker and more powerful, but it’s also available with four-wheel drive, if you have the budget for the high-spec GT-Line S model. With the electric motor and petrol engine working in tandem, it pulls strongly and should cope well with a sensibly matched caravan (see: matching a car to a caravan for more on this).
All versions come well-equipped, but the range-topping GT-Line S has a very comprehensive specification. There are lots of gadgets inside the cabin, and the materials have a quality feel.
There’s enough space for adults to travel in comfort front and rear and lots of boot space, too. A capacity of 587 litres compares well with the Sportage’s rivals. We hope to test the new Kia soon.
Take a look at our review of a previous Sportage, the 2022 Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDI HEV AWD GT-Line S Auto, a car which towed with ease and offered plenty of stability.
