Mazda’s second fully electric car, the 6e, is due to arrive in UK showrooms next year. The new saloon offers a more appealing spec than the rather quirky MX-30 EV, which was axed earlier this year, having struggled to achieve sales.

While that car featured a relatively small battery and short range, the new 6e is an electric car for towing that has an official range of 298-343 miles, depending on whether a 68.8 or 80kWh battery is fitted.

The 6e has a more useful towing capacity of 1500kg. Combine that with a kerbweight of over two tonnes, and a broad choice of family caravans could be matched to the 6e.

At 4.92m long, the 6e is longer than the old Mazda 6 saloon. That extra length promises more interior space.

The version fitted with the smaller battery provides 258hp and has a 0-62mph time of 7.6 seconds, while the Long Range model has 245hp and a 0-62mph sprint of 7.8 seconds. Both vehicles send power to the rear wheels.

Go for the standard model if you wish to recharge your car quickly – a 10-80% charge takes just 24 minutes if you can find a sufficiently powerful charger (see: how to charge an EV while towing if you need some tips on this).

The Long Range model uses different battery chemistry and can’t be topped up so quickly, needing 47 minutes to go from 10-80%. We hope to tow with the new Mazda next year, so watch this space.

See what happened when an EV and diesel car were both put to the test when towing a caravan on a 1,200 mile round trip.
