Fire is one of the scariest things any caravan owner could have to face. While it’s hopefully something you will never encounter, having a fire extinguisher for a caravan packed away before you set off on tour is essential. In case of emergency, the most important rule when it comes to fire safety in a caravan or motorhome is to get everyone out as quickly as possible.
While there are a range of caravan fire extinguishers available on the market, it’s worth noting that the Caravan and Motorhome Club recommends installing a 1kg aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) device manufactured and tested in accordance with BS EN 3 and with at least a 5A rating.
However, you should not use AFFF – which is water-based – where electricity is present. AFFF is also not suitable for chip pan or frying pan fires – the water will superheat and cause a flashover. Fire blankets are an effective option for cooking oil/fat fires.
