For weight reasons, caravans do not usually come with their own inbuilt steps, meaning there will always be quite a step up from the ground to get inside your tourer. This is where having a set of the best caravan steps can make a real difference to your touring experience.

Caravans do, of course, give you all the freedom you need to travel where you want to go, but they need proper clearance to be able to do that. There needs to be quite a clearance between the bottom of the car and the road.

Fortunately, the market has not been slow to cotton on to this problem, and there are numerous lightweight steps for a caravan on the market that you can use to help you in – some with the added bonus of having a hold rail too.

Of course, if you are buying a brand new tourer (and see our guide to the best caravans if you’re looking for one) chances are the dealer will throw in a set of steps with the vehicle.

But if you are buying a used caravan, or for some reason that hasn’t happened, here is our choice of the best caravan steps on the market.

Fiamma Heavy Duty Motorhome Caravan Camping Step

Fiamma Heavy Duty Motorhome Caravan Camping Step

Reason to buy:

  • Lightweight

Reason to avoid:

  • Its weight could make it easier to be knocked or blown away, not as robust as others

A step from a trusted name in caravanning that should provide solid support, without sinking into the ground beneath you. As it weighs less than 1kg, it shouldn’t eat into your caravan’s payload, so you can stow it carefully away, either inside the gas bottle locker, or inside the tourer (preferably weighted down) when you are on the move.

VonHaus Folding Step

Vonhaus Folding Step

Reason to buy:

  • Easy to stow away

Reason to avoid:

  • Fold away steps always have a tendency to fold away

Each leg of this step folds inwards to make it slimmer and easier to store when not in use. The top has an anti-slip surface too. The manufacturer claims it can hold weights up to 150kg too.

Xtremeauto Double Caravan Step

Xtremeauto Double Caravan Step

Reason to buy:

  • Easily accommodates everything

Reason to avoid:

  • On the heavy side

A double step for a caravan, both for extra security and possibly to give you the opportunity to step out and check the weather before you decide to venture out properly when you’re at your campsite (if you’re unsure where to go next, our best caravan parks guide will help you choose).

The caravan steps have an anti-slip surface and are 70cm wide, while a weight limit of 200kg should offer some useful sturdiness too. You could even use it as a temporary seat if you have an extra guest for a caravan barbecue and not enough chairs.

Oypla Single Caravan Step

Oypla Single Caravan Step Stool

Reason to buy:

  • Useful extra hold

Reason to avoid:

  • Bulky (it doesn’t collapse)

A caravan step for those of you who may be a little less firm on your feet, this includes a handy grab rail to help you step up. It may even be useful if your caravan doesn’t have a particularly helpful grab rail on the inside.

The step itself comes with a soft rubber non-slip rubber mat and feet, while the handle also has a soft grip. It has a maximum weight capacity of 150kg.

Sunncamp Folding Step with Carry Handle

Reason to buy:

  • Safety latch locks legs into position

Reason to avoid:

  • On the small side

A step from another trusted brand, this features legs that lock into position with a safety latch but also fold away to make the step easier to store – which should be particularly easy to do as this one is only 38cm wide. The step also comes with a built in carry handle, while the legs have anti-slip rubber feet too.

Kampa Step Up Lightweight Plastic Step

Kampa Step Up Lightweight Plastic Step

Reason to buy:

  • Budget-friendly

Reason to avoid:

  • On the small side

Another step from a trusted brand, this one doesn’t take up much room, being only 58cm wide, but is still robust enough to help you into your caravan time after time. It comes with a rubber anti-slip mat and has a maximum weight capacity of 150kg.
